Young artist to watch in 2022
State in Which You Reside: Oregon.
Art Education: The Florence Academy of Art.
Style: A culmination of contemplating and studying the effect, feeling, and story I want to convey and using whatever technique best bridges the gap.
Creative Spark: I love to read Carl Jung and other psychology- or philosophy-related books. Hiking, camping, and being outdoors also help me think from a grander perspective.
Other Passions: Anything alchemical in which I take raw materials and turn them into something higher.
One Thing People Don’t Know About You: People who only know me online don’t see the counterbalance: a heavy dose of wit and humor (or at least I think so) in real life.
Best Art Advice Received: “Never be afraid to change something. Anything that blocks your process is destructive; everything can change.” —Ramiro Sanchez
Biggest Fear: Stagnation.
Pet Peeve: Wobbly, unstable easels.
Quirkiest Trait: I make lists for fun.
Mantra or Motto: “In filth, it will be found.” This is an old alchemic saying meaning that what you need most is where you least want to look.
Favorite Studio Music: Bach, Roo Panes.
Favorite Work by Another Artist: ECCE HOMO by Antonio Ciseri. I get chills standing in its presence at Italy’s Palazzo Pitti.
Future Goals: To have achieved such proficiency in painting that, whenever I’m struck with “divine inspiration,” I never have to worry about whether I’m capable of executing it.
Price Range: $500 to $5,000.
Representation: www.samuelhoskins.com.
