Style & Inspirations: Much of my inspiration and style derives from Zuni artists such as my father, Geddy Epaloose, Alex Seowtewa and Duane Dishta. As I began to extend my frame of knowledge in the art world, I found myself inspired by artists that created works in the styles of baroque, cubism, romanticism and neo-expressionism.
Art Education: My father provided me with fundamental visual art information such as color theory and composition at the age of 17. Since then, I’ve been creating paintings, primarily with oil, and have had opportunities to teach students, showcase my work at galleries and connect with other artists.
Best Art Advice Received: “People are too afraid to fail, so they don’t even try. Don’t be afraid to take the first step.” Regardless of what skill or craft you begin to learn in any domain, you will fail several times before you get your own studio, get your work into collections or make your first sale.
Favorite Studio Music: I often listen to a mix of genres, but my most played would be soul, rap, metal, classical and traditional Zuni songs depending on the subject matter I am focusing on.
Favorite Work by Another Artist: A lot of my favorite works are of my father’s, so outside of that I would say THE TAKING OF CHRIST by Caravaggio, GOTEN-YAMA HILL by Hokusai, and SYMBIOSIS by Mark Maggiori are some of my favorite.
Artistic Goals: I would like to encourage the youth and other aspiring artists to believe they have the potential to create and succeed in any genre of art. There are no limits when it comes to expressing your identity and exploring your conscience through creativity.
Other Passions: Outside of painting, I would consider myself a clothing designer, as I draft, sew and/or embroider traditional Zuni clothing and contemporary Western clothing such as dresses and suits. I also create traditional Zuni inlay jewelry and some other cool things.
